S683 | 'Good Bye' from Americans
The American staff of the American Service Club in Edinburgh (Ella T. Cruise, director; Anna W. Cleave, assistant director; Elizabeth M'Kinlay, Paula M'Knight, and Lucy M'Kinlay) address this message through the Post Bag to the people of Edinburgh:
The American Red Cross at 53 Prince Street is officially closing on Monday morning, January 7.[*] It is with regret that we close our operation here, as it has been a very pleasant one as well as a very successful one. It would have been impossible for us to carry on our programme without the help of you people of Edinburgh. Throughout our stay here, which has lasted for three and a half years, we have found you to be the most cooperative, friendly, and hospitable. It is impossible individually to thank each one who has helped us, so we are taking this means to express our appreciation for the fine service we have received.
The fact tht Edinburgh has been one of the most popular leave centres for the American troops speaks for your kindness and friendliness. In saying "Thank you" we speak not only for ourselves and the thousands of Americans you have served but also for the families of those men and women who are grateful for all you have done for their sons and daughters.
Hundreds of you have worked in our club in a voluntary capacity giving many hours of your time, and really doing a great service for the men and women. To all of these volunteers go our sincere thanks in appreciation of the wonderful job they have done and for their loyalty and friendship.
It is impossible for us to list all of the departments and firms with which we have dealt, but we do want them to know that we have appreciated the fine service they have given us and the spirit in which it was given.
Enough praise cannot be given the members of our staff who have worked in the club and who have played a large part in creating the pleasant atmosphere which has prevailed here. We thank them for their loyalty and for the fine job they have done.
As we leave Edinburgh we say, from the bottom of our hearts, "Many thanks from many Yanks."
